Tesla Coil - acgrouse - 03-04-2015

I've always wanted to build a massive spark generator. I have copper tubing, enamel, pvc pipe and a spark gap. I can get microwave capacitors and I have a couple now, but I need the wire. If anyone can help with the wire, base, and top load we could have a coil up and running. Any ideas/funds/bits are welcome.

Have any motors or transformers to tear apart? Plenty of good wiring in those if you're willing to strip it.

The thing about high voltage is it needs to be in one piece or it arcs like crazy. Transformers have tons as well, but I would still need to splice it.

Hmm, can't epoxy or silicone dip the splices to prevent that? Or will the high point still cause it to arc through?

I'll have to try it. We are dealing with crazy voltages here.

I brought in a 15000v 60ma neon transformer for someone to use
Your welcome to it, and I can get more. The 60ma is the largest secondary current available for neon, it throws a pretty hefty arc 2-3". How powerful were you planning on making it?

Might be a dumb idea, but could the neon transformer coils handle the 15kV input from a second transformer? Something around 1.5MV? THAT would throw an arc. Nice eerie coronal glow too.

If not, at a minimum a neon transformer would make an awesome input because then your tower really only needs a 1:15 ratio to get into the right voltage range. 4 primary turns and 60 secondaries is a lot less copper than having to wind a secondary to 2000 turns. 20kV 600-ish pF ceramic caps are cheap on eBay.
